IBIS was established in 1995 to encourage research into, and to facilitate the exchange of information on book and periodical illustrations, the artists and their publishers. The Society has a worldwide membership including artists, collectors, bibliographers, writers and general enthusiasts. Whilst IBIS embraces all aspects of illustrative art, the main emphasis is on the illustration of texts in English since the 1830s.

The Winter 2020 issue of our thrice-yearly bulletin, Studies in Illustration, was published in November 2020 and sent to all members. This extra-large issue includes articles on John Mackay (Simon Cooke), Alfed Garth Jones (Charles Hiatt), Victorian Artist's Christmas Cards (Lesley Delaney) and the second part of a series on Harry Rountree as a commercial artist (Michael Pirie), supplemented by reviews, notes and editorial material.
